Mural Alley - DOMO Walls #1

Mark your calendars! American Graffiti Festival Parade - June 9th-11th, 2023. 1. Cinema History: Artist Ella Yates lives a nomadic lifestyle, choosing to immerse herself for months at a time in a location before painting her murals to truly encapsulate the local spirit and imagination. Fun fact! You can visit the "State Theatre" featured in this mural today! Check out their website for a list of events, screenings, and performances. https://thestate.org/ Spot the references! The postage stamps explained [combination of sponsors and cinema references circled within mural with line drawn to reference: Peer Recovery Project, Modesto View Newspaper, George Lucas.] 2. Machine Man Tiger: Did you notice how the wind blows in the direction of Cinema History where the film reel is peeling towards the viewer? What a fun creative choice by the artist to show how these murals are next to each other! -Artist Shack Chavez draws inspiration from anime, superheroes, nature, and his vibrant culture as a muralist and business owner all throughout Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. 3. Viva La Vida: Symbolism check! -The calla lily (life and death) -Corn (tied to daily life in Mexico - the people of Mexico call themselves the "children of the corn") -Red peppers (protection from evil spirits in Mexican culture) -Rooster (bravery, dedication, and honor) -Cactus heart (enduring love) -Serape Blanket (A motive that runs deep within Mexican culture going back to the Aztec's who believed wearing brightly colors would bring favor from the gods and ward off evil. Originally the patterns were used to identify one's family or social status as well as hometown.) 4. Doberman: Doberman, Raven, man, crown inspiration (awaiting artist reply on Insta for personal reasoning behind symbolic choices.) 5. DoMo Walls Chris Murphy, an instrumental force in coordinating and implementing the community murals in downtown Modesto, gave us the inside scoop! Acclaimed muralist Ella Yates painted the State Theatre kids on the art all off of J Street between 10th and 11th as a part of the Classic Community Murals project. This was the first mural in what was to become Mural Alley. Then Domo Walls was created to do projects in the art alley along the walls of the Chartreuse Muse becoming Mural Alley. Local and national artists were commissioned to do murals all on the same weekend in a festival format that brought together music and vendors as 8 murals were created at once! There have been three Domo wall events, the latest being completed in october 2022. (Those murals are where we end the tour!) 6. Peer Recovery Project Information - ochre dipped hands etc. ...
